Our History
Since its creation in November 1987, Kuje Area Council has evolved alongside the Federal Capital Territory, growing from a newly established local administrative area into a vibrant centre of communities, agriculture and development. Creation of the Federal Capital Territory
The Federal Capital Territory was established in 1976 following the decision to create a new federal capital for Nigeria. The establishment of the FCT laid the foundation for a new administrative structure that would later evolve into the Area Council system, including Kuje.
Establishment of Development Areas
As part of efforts to decentralise administration and promote balanced development across the Federal Capital Territory, Kuje was among the development areas established in 1981. These development areas were created to strengthen local administration, promote social welfare and support community development.
Creation of Kuje Area Council
Kuje Area Council was created in November 1987 as part of the restructuring of local administration within the Federal Capital Territory. The creation established Kuje as a distinct local administrative area with responsibility for promoting development, providing local services and representing the interests of its communities.
Reorganisation of Local Administration
With effect from 1 January 1988, the Federal Capital Territory's development-area structure was reorganised into four local government councils: Abuja Municipality, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Abaji. The reorganisation gave these councils statutory responsibilities similar to local government councils elsewhere in Nigeria and strengthened the framework for local administration and development.
Adoption of the Area Council Structure
Following constitutional developments relating to the administration of the Federal Capital Territory, the four local government councils were renamed Area Councils in 1989. Kuje consequently became formally recognised within the Area Council structure of the Federal Capital Territory.
Statutory Recognition of the Area Councils
Further legal reforms in 1990 reinforced the Area Council structure within the Federal Capital Territory. The reforms confirmed Kuje, alongside Abaji, Abuja Municipal and Gwagwalada, as one of the recognised Area Councils responsible for carrying out local government functions within the Territory.
Growth and Development of Kuje
Kuje experienced significant population growth, expansion of settlements and increasing economic activity as development spread across the Federal Capital Territory. Its strategic location, agricultural potential and proximity to Abuja contributed to its emergence as an important residential and agricultural area within the FCT.
Kuje's Growing Role in the FCT
Kuje has continued to develop as one of the major Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory. Its extensive land area, agricultural activity, expanding residential communities and growing infrastructure have strengthened its importance within the FCT. The Area Council continues to serve a diverse and rapidly developing population while working to improve local services and community infrastructure.
A New Phase of Development
In 2026, Kuje Area Council entered a new phase of administration following the election and swearing-in of a new Council leadership. The administration has emphasised infrastructure, environmental sanitation, water supply, healthcare, youth empowerment, governance and workers' welfare as areas of development focus. Recent initiatives include the Operation Keep Kuje Clean campaign, efforts to revive the Kuje water system and programmes aimed at strengthening legislative capacity.
